the early assassins were very brave, but their assassination method was too simple and their probability of success was very low. In January 1933, Hitler was elected German Chancellor, and the assassination against him was also escalating. In the next five years, he was assassinated at least 16 times. Some people handed Hitler a bunch of flowers and tried to spray the hidden poison on his face. Others handed Hitler a pen containing explosives, but the assassination failed. The high popularity of

made Hitler mistakenly think that his situation was very safe. After more than five years in power, his security measures are still relatively simple. However, the following actions made Hitler understand that he had become the target of a group of firm “anti dictator” assassins.

Georg elsel: after Hitler came to power, Nazi forces were almost omnipresent and omnipotent in Germany. Under such circumstances, the assassination of Hitler became more difficult and dangerous, but some people still chose to use violence against the Nazis, including Georg elsel, 36.

, a German Communist born in poverty, is a member of the “red pioneer battalion”, a paramilitary force under the Communist Party. He made the decision to assassinate Hitler in the autumn of 1938.

on November 8, 1938, elsel came to the bergbraukele brewery in Munich to watch the celebrations held by the Nazis in memory of the 1923 brewery coup.

after some reconnaissance, elsel had a clearer understanding of the assassination plan. He decided to place a bomb enough to kill Hitler and the core members of the Nazis in the bergbraukele brewery in the next year. He plans to spend 12 months collecting the necessary materials and then designing and manufacturing a bomb himself.

elsel first stole a fuse and some explosives from an ordnance manufacturer of his boss, konisisbelon. Then he found a job in a nearby quarry where he could get explosives and detonators relatively easily. He spent his evenings and weekends working in his workshop, drafting different plans and experimenting. Having no experience in detonating explosives, he experimented with model bombs in the farmland around his home until he found out the amount of explosives needed. In the spring, he returned to Munich to measure the bergbraukele brewery and draw a more detailed sketch of the hall of the bergbraukele brewery. He found an ideal place for his bomb: the podium and a thick stone pillar behind the desk, which supported a building as long as a hall. Elsel believes that if the bomb detonates there, it can not only kill the people around it, but also collapse the huge building above.

in early August 1939, elsel left his hometown and came to Munich. He carried with him a wooden box containing his tools: a plane, a hammer, a saw, a file and a bomb hidden in a special interlayer. In addition, he also carried 50 kilograms of explosives, six timing stopwatches, detonators, wires and batteries. Elsel registered with his real name and started working after finding a place to live.

elsel comes to the bergbraukele brewery at about 9 o’clock every night. About an hour later, he would sneak up to the building where he was trying to explode and hide in a storage room until the brewery was closed and the door was locked. After that, he began to work with the help of the faint light of the flashlight until about 7:30 the next morning. At this time, the staff of the brewery came to work and he slipped out the back door.

elsel’s initial method was to dig a small hole in the stone pillar to place the bomb. But when he found a new layer of wooden dado outside the stone column, he had to spend three nights sawing a small hole in the dado. He would tiptoe to minimize the noise, collect every pile of sawdust and clean them up. He wanted to ensure that no trace was left after the completion. Even the sawn wooden wall panel was carefully made into a well connected secret door.

exposed the stone pillar, elsel began to dig a groove on it to place the bomb. For nearly a month, he used hand drills, hammers and chisels as tools to loosen the sand and pry open the bricks. Of course, after all this work, clean it very carefully and take out the broken sand and bricks with a cloth bag. The whole project went on very hard and very slowly. In this cave like hall, every sound made by the hammer is like the sound of a gunUsually send an echo. In order not to be found, he must make every knock sound and external sound at the same time.

according to elsel’s plan, when the bomb exploded, he would be safely in Switzerland. Therefore, he needs to make an automatic timer that can be set several days in advance and connect it to the wire. He transformed the operation of a clock with additional gears and levers, and then magically created a timer that can walk up to 144 hours before the lever is activated. The lever activates a steel pointed shuttle by triggering an elastic pressing system, and then the ejected shuttle stabs into the detonator in the opposite direction. The detonator was packed in a rifle without bullets and wrapped with explosives. To ensure accuracy, elsel added a clock timer as the automatic safety device of the whole bomb.

on the evening of November 2, after two months of hard work, elsel finally placed the bomb in the stone pillar. Three more nights later, the timer was ready. He set the explosion time at 21:20 on the evening of November 8 – just halfway through Hitler’s speech.
