North Korea refused to help Japan attack the
of the Ming Dynasty – the
of the Korean rynchon patriotic war in 1592. In 1592 and 1597, Hideki Toyotomi of Japan brazenly launched a war of aggression against North Korea by mobilizing nearly 200000 troops and 700 warships on the pretext that North Korea refused to help Japan attack China, because 1592 was the year of rynchon in the summer calendar, In the history of Korea, these two wars are commonly referred to as the Renchen Patriotic War.
the beginning of the Renchen patriotic war can be traced back to the Warring States period of Japan, which began in the second half of the 15th century. At that time, Japan’s commercial capital was growing day by day, and commercial cities gradually emerged in western Japan. At that time, Hideki Toyotomi (1536-1598), a feudal lord and leader of a big warlord, ruled the territory of each vassal one after another with strong force after a long-term scuffle in the second half of the 16th century, conquered large and small lords, expanded political, economic and military strength, and unified the whole country of Japan in 1590, ending the Warring States era. In 1585, the emperor appointed him as Guan Bai (the official title of the imperial government for the emperor), which is actually the highest ruler in the country. The emperor of Japan is nothing but a puppet at his mercy.
before Hideki Toyotomi had completed the grand cause of unifying Japan, he had expressed his ambition and plan of “invading Korea and Ming Dynasty” and had begun to prepare. In 1578, when Hideyoshi Toyotomi was still serving as Yoshida’s senior general, he made it clear to Yoshida that after the army calmed down the western region of Honshu, Japan, it would immediately enter Kyushu, and then “Map North Korea and spy on the Daming country”. On March 16, 1586, when Hideki Toyotomi met with foreign missionaries named coelio and others in Osaka, he also said frankly that after calming Japan, he would also be prepared to “concentrate on conquering North Korea and China”.
Hideki Toyotomi’s ambition to expand abroad has also been encouraged and supported by big businessmen of Japanese commercial capital. With the growth of commercial capital in western Japan, big businessmen urged foreign trade and conquest in order to get rich. Toyotomi Hideyoshi represented this demand of commercial capital. With their support, they not only unified the whole country of Japan, but also attempted to conquer North Korea and invade the Ming Dynasty. According to this trend, the Japanese Grand feudal lords group represented by Toyotomi Hideyoshi dreamed of establishing a “unified” feudal empire including Korea, China and Japan through the war of aggression, so as to dominate the Asian continent and enslave other nationalities. In addition, after Hideki Toyoda unified Japan, class contradictions in Japan have become increasingly acute and intensified unprecedentedly. In order to divert the attention of the domestic people’s struggle and attract the feudal lords and warriors to the predatory war of aggression, Hideki Toyotomi group will launch a war of aggression abroad at all costs to maintain and consolidate its domestic rule.
in order to achieve the purpose of foreign expansion, Toyotomi Xiuji asked to expand trade with North Korea and China, trying to take the opportunity to find an excuse for his aggressive policy.
as early as 1586, Toyotomi Xiuji sent envoys to the Ming Dynasty to ask for trade, which was rejected. This is because Japanese pirates have committed disgraceful acts of piracy off the coast of North Korea and China, and the Chinese and North Korean people are extremely disgusted with Japan. Toyotomi Hideyoshi was closed in China. In 1589, he sent envoys to North Korea to express “friendship” to the king of North Korea and asked the North Korean government to cooperate with him in attacking the Ming Dynasty. At that time, China and the DPRK maintained friendly relations, so the DPRK sternly rejected the demands of the Japanese aggressors. Under the pretext that North Korea refused to help Japan attack the Ming Dynasty, Toyotomi Xiuji began to invade North Korea, attempted to occupy North Korea, and then used North Korea as a springboard to attack the Ming Dynasty and realize its ambition to expand its territory.
in the spring of 1592, Hideki Toyotomi brazenly launched the war of aggression against Korea by mobilizing 200000 troops and more than 700 warships on the pretext that North Korea refused to help Japan attack China.
Japanese troops landed in North Korea. In only three months, they successively captured Kyoto, Seoul, Pyongyang, Kaesong and other important cities of North Korea. The king fled to the Yalu River and hid. The whole North Korea was in danger like a nest egg. Seeing the victory of the first battle, Toyotomi Xiuji was quite proud. He arrogantly said to his subordinates:
“you wait and see. The good play is still ahead. In a short time, the subjects of North Korea and China will fall at my feet and wait for me!”
however, he never dreamed that they suffered an unprecedented defeat at sea, because they met the Navy led by North Korea’s resourceful and patriotic general Li shunchen.
on May 1, 1592, Li shunchen learned that more than 50 Japanese warships were docked in Yupu port, and most of the soldiers on board went ashore to rob people’s property. He immediately commanded more than 90 turtle boats (a kind of warship invented by the North Koreans long ago. The hull is equipped with a protective plate shaped like a turtle shell made of hardwood, so it is called turtle boat, which is very suitable for long-term water war) to sneak attack the Japanese army. The Japanese army had never seen such a warship before. Yuanwang thought it was a group of big turtles crawling towards them!
after a while, they saw that the “turtles” were warships, and the Japanese army immediately panicked. It was too late when they hurried into the boat and were ready to lift the anchor to escape.
“fire!” At the command of Li shunchen, thousands of fire dragons pounced on the Japanese ship. “Roar…” on the day, a hundred flowers were in full bloom and fireworks were swirling around the ship. Under the intense gunfire, the Japanese troops ran around with their heads in their arms, crying and howling. In the twinkling of an eye, more than 40 Japanese ships were blown up and sunk, and countless soldiers were injured and killed. The arrogant Japanese fleet was swallowed up by Li shunchen’s “big turtles”.
in 1593, at the request of the Korean government, the Chinese government of the Ming Dynasty decided to assist the DPRK against the Japanese and sent reinforcements to fight side by side with the Korean army. The two armies soon recovered Pyongyang and Kaesong and drove the Japanese army out of Northern Korea. Toyotomi Hideyoshi sent envoys to conduct peace talks with the DPRK in an attempt to use the opportunity of negotiations to gather strength,. Due to Japan’s harsh territorial requirements, the negotiations finally broke down
